DGC  Events and Programs in June 2021

Friday, June 4th, 2021 was our Annual Picnic (June 11th, our regular meeting date is the week of Eagle Man and traffic here will be unpredictable with road closures, etc.). Helen and Jack Saum graciously volunteered to host at their residence

Club Annual Picnic and Awards.

CAMBRIDGE:The Dorchester Garden Club held its annual picnic and club awards presentation on June 4, 2021 at the home of club member Helen Saum and her husband Jack. Due to the pandemic, last year's event was cancelled and since regular meetings for 2020 were suspended, this year's program recognized the design and horticulture top awards recipients for 2019-2020.


The Division I Top Horticultural Competition for the Lednum Cup 1st place was awarded to Beverly Shelly, 2nd place Cookie Brohawn, 3rd place Joan P. Johnson, 4th Place Cheryl Willey.

The Division II Top Design Competition for the Tawes Bowl 1st place was awarded to Mari Stanley, 2nd place Kay Karminski, 3rd place Judy Slaughter, 4th place Cheryl Willey.







The Dorchester Garden Club Horticultural Award Competition for the Kathryn C. Holt Cup for the most points in the Rosa Section 1st place was awarded to Patti Hopkins, 2nd place Cheryl Willey, 3rd place Sandy Lucas, 4th place Kay Karminski.

In addition, the Perennial Bloom Award was presented to Publicity Chair, Ellen Higgins, in recognition of her work as publisher of the club's quarterly newsletter, "The Diggers."

Jeanne Bernard, former Dorchester Garden Club President, was recognized for her outstanding service to the club by current president, David Adams and Federated Garden Clubs of Mary land's 1st Vice President, Susie Middleton. Jeanne Bernard now serves as Director of the Federated Garden Clubs of Maryland District I, which encompasses all FGCMD garden clubs on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

Club President, David Adams, was also pleased to announce that regular, monthly meetings would resume starting in July at the Cambridge Yacht Club. Several new members were introduced and officially welcomed into the club. Mr. Adams expressed the club's appreciation to the Saums for their generosity in opening up their beautiful home and gardens for the past two Dorchester Garden Club Annual Picnic and Awards.  


















June 5-13 2021 Philadelphia Flower Show "Habitat, Nature's Masterpiece" Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, Philadelphia, PA

Monday, June 7th , 2021: Trip to ‘Smokey Cat’ Lavender Farm, 5090 Long Swamp Road, Federalsburg, MD. 
We carpooled and met in the parking lot at the old ‘SAV-A-LOT, Grocery store between Cedar St and Crusader St off of Route 50. 
Meet at 11.45 am. Leaving at promptly at 12 Noon. 
We packed our own Brown Bag Lunch and the club supplied drinks.

2021 visit to LAVENDER FARM
On Monday, June 7th, 2021 over 30 members carpooled to the Smoky Cat Lavender Farm in Federalsburg. We enjoyed a really delightful afternoon which featured picnicking with an intense lavender aroma in the air. Owner Debbie Brohawn spoke briefly about how the farm got started, its purpose and planting guidelines and uses for the variety of lavender cultivars she grows. We picked lavender bouquets in the fields and shopped for plants and other lavender goodies in the gift shop on site. A great day!
































June 8th , 2021: Celebrate National Garden Week with a Garden Tour at the Cylburn Arboretum 

June 11th, 2021:  FGCMD Virtual Book Club Meeting at 1:00 PM via Zoom. Selection: "The Language of Flowers" by Vanessa Diffenbach Contact Carolynyb28@gmail.com 11 District II Executive Board Meeting
